Search Engines have 3 types of results when performing searches; Local Results, Organic Results, and Sponsored Links. The Local Results, which are used when searching for local businesses,  are generally at the top of the screen. Having an optimized local listing is what gets you on the front page.

The Organic Results which are directly under the local results are always displayed, whether looking for a business locally, or searching abroad. These results are displayed based on relevancy of content.
The easiest way for local businesses to gain organic results are by directory listings. As you can see in the example Mystic Crypt has an optimized local listing, as well as 3 Organic Results displayed from directory listings. To gain exposure for local businesses it is best to have an optimized local listing, as well as many directory listings. Listing in directories also provides valuable back links, which will help your website gain more visibility.

Sponsored Links are generally to the right of the screen. These links rotate and are not always visible. In most cases these are Pay Per Click Ads, where businesses pay for every click they receive whenever a customer clicks on their link. This can be quite expensive for a local business, and is mostly recommended for businesses who do business abroad.

The Golden Triangle.png

A new study has added tangible evidence to the view that the highest ranking search results get the most attention from users, and the lower ranking results are almost invisible to most people.
The joint study was conducted by 3 firms;  Enquiro, Did-it, and Eyetools. They examined the eye movements of users viewing search result pages.

The study found that most viewers looked at results in an "F" shaped  pattern, with the eye travelling vertically along the far left side of the results looking for visual cues (relevant words, brands, etc) and then scanning to the right, as if something caught the participant's attention.

The researchers called this pattern a "Golden Triangle" at the top of result pages. The triangle extends across the top natural search result, then angles back to the left of the page down to the bottom-most "above the fold" result.
This area was viewed by 100% of the 50 participants.

Here is an example of what a Business Profile Directory looks like. For most directories there is a space for detailed business information, customer reviews, a link to your website, as well as many other features.
